Midwifery Education has been offered in the Rotunda Hospital since 1773. It was the first hospital in Ireland, and one of the first in Europe, to offer a formal midwifery education programme. Since 1997, the School of Midwifery and its linked third level university, the University of Dublin, Trinity College, has been offering the Postgraduate Diploma in Midwifery. This programme was subsequently changed to the Higher Diploma in Midwifery (18 months duration) in 2007.

The Rotunda Hospital awards medals & prizes to selected midwifery students. The awards are presented to midwifery students who have achieved the best grades in theory and/or practice as appropriate.
