Neonatal Care

Postnatal Ward Care

Healthy term infants usually accompany their mothers to the postnatal ward following birth. Midwives on the postnatal wards provide care to healthy newborn babies. However, a small number of babies will need medical care that can be provided in the postnatal ward without admission to the neonatal unit. This ensures that the baby stays with their mother at all times in a safe environment. Medical care provided to babies on the postnatal wards includes administration of phototherapy for jaundice and giving antibiotics to babies who are at risk of developing an early infection.
