Minister Pat Rabbitte, TD Launches a New €70m Energy Efficiency Fund in the Rotunda Hospital

Energy Minister, Pat Rabbitte formally announced a €70m Energy Efficiency Fund that will dramatically improve energy efficiency savings in public and commercial buildings right across the country in the Rotunda Hospital.

The Rotunda is deemed an exemplar site and was selected for the launch because of its particiaption in a number of energy efficiency programmes over the past number of years. These included installing a completely new boilerhouse plant and undertaking an extensive programme to upgrade the lighting system throughout the main hospital building. Funding for the projects was received from the Sustainable Energy Authority of Ireland (SEAI) and HSE Estates.

Speaking at the launch, the Master, Dr Sam Coulter-Smith said: “We are delighted to be a part of this worthwhile initiative and to show our commitment and leadership by our participation in this beneficial scheme that has the dual advantage of bringing down costs and improving the environment.

The energy savings generated by these projects are phenominal. Our utility usage has been dramatically reduced since 2010:

  •  electricity usage is down by 9%
  •  gas usage is down by 23%
  •  347 tonnes reduction in C02 emissions

Total energy savings of 1,284,093 kw/h have been achieved. These results show that the programmes work in a real and meaningful way, where the benefits and cost savings are clearly identifiable”.

As a key deliverable of the Government’s Action Plan for Jobs, the projections are that the Fund may deliver up to 675 jobs, direct and indirect, for every €10 million expenditure. The Fund is also a cornerstone of Ireland’s second National Energy Efficiency Action Plan and it will provide finance to energy efficiency projects across all sectors of the economy.
