Smoking Cessation at Rotunda Hospital

The Rotunda Hospital is implementing a smoke-free campus from November 1st 2013. This initiative is endorsed by the Board of Governors and the Executive Management Team.

No smoking symbolSmoking is the biggest cause of ill health and death in Ireland. One in every two smokers will die from a tobacco related illness. Tobacco smoke contains more than 4,000 chemicals including tar which causes cancer.

Smoking during pregnancy can seriously affect both a woman’s own health and her baby’s development. It increases the risk of miscarriage and of the placenta separating from the womb before the baby is born, which can cause premature birth or stillbirth. Babies born to mothers who smoke are usually smaller. Even stopping smoking in the last few weeks of pregnancy can still benefit both mother and baby.

The Rotunda’s Tobacco Free Campus Committee has been established. The objective is to support staff, patients and visitors to renormalize No smoking while pregnant symbolsmoking and to make smoking an unacceptable practice on our campus grounds. Smoking at entrances and exits to the Rotunda Hospital buildings, or any part of the campus grounds is not allowed since the introduction of the ban on 1 November 2013. We will be providing support to staff and patients to help them to stop smoking.

World Health Organisation (WHO) research and the experiences in other countries show that health warnings on cigarette packages, combined with a display of graphic photographs have assisted smokers to quit. The Minister for Health, Dr James Reilly, TD has recently outlined plans to introduce this practice in Ireland.
